A Day of Action to protect the Global Benchmark for Water Purity

The purest water known to science is currently under threat from gravel mining and Save Our Water Tiny is joining the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition on June 8th in a province wide Day of Action to declare enough is enough

The residents of Tiny have the incredible fortune to have access to the Alliston aquifer, an extraordinary natural resource renowned for its unparalleled purity. The groundwater in Tiny isn’t just clean—it is the purest water known to science. This exceptional status has been confirmed by researchers from prestigious institutions such as Heidelberg University in Germany, the University of Alberta, and the University of Ottawa. Their rigorous testing has established the water tested in and around the Waverley Uplands as the global benchmark for water purity.

However, this invaluable resource is currently under dire threat. Gravel mining operations on French’s Hill, situated directly above the aquifer, are jeopardizing the purity of this water. The gravel company’s activities are not only depleting millions of liters of this pristine water but also disrupting what is likely the natural filtration process that contributes to its unparalleled purity.

The remarkable purity of the water is awe-inspiring, and what is important to note is that the scientific community has yet to fully understand the processes behind this phenomenon. Researchers from the Universities of Alberta and Ottawa are committed to unraveling this mystery, but their work is at risk due to the ongoing gravel mining activities. In 2022, Tiny Council became partner with the groundwater study with the drafting of a "letter of intent" in support of the study. The potential insights from this research are not only significant for our local community but also hold global implications, especially for regions struggling with access to clean water.

What can we do to protect this vital resource?

We must demand a moratorium on aggregate extraction at French’s Hill. By halting the mining operations, we can ensure that the research is completed and the groundwater source remains uncontaminated. Join Save Our Water Tiny and the Reform Gravel Mining us in a rallying cry for action on Saturday, June 8, 2024.

Gather at 2 PM at the Dunlop Office in Orillia, and at Doug Downie's office in Orillia or participate in the province-wide day/week of action alongside the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition (RGMC) at 10 AM.
